What I Do
Raising a child is epic.
It’s often the biggest thing any of us does. Children fill our hearts with all kinds of emotion from the day they show up. Their moments and their stories effortlessly bob and weave around us, changing as they grow. Child-rearing years become so full and busy that time really does slip away while we aren’t looking. One day we glance around and realize that certain moments just don’t happen any more. The images and the stories have evolved and changed.
My own little boy looked at me a dozen times a day with that little face that I adored, with his hair cut a little too short for my tastes because he loved it that way, with eyes too big for his head and a seriousness in his expression that never quite reflected how much fun he was having. He’s still here, it’s just that he’s full grown. I love the man he is, I love the competent, loving, hard-working and funny person he has become. Well, actually he was always pretty funny and I always loved that about him.
Looking in the rear view mirror at my parenting days is a far more attractive and comfortable place than I expected it to be, especially since we all made it through the rough spots relatively unscathed. Still, not a week goes by that my soul doesn’t ache a little for that little face that I’ll never see again except in pictures. That I’ll never feel those little arms wrapped around me like he’d never let go. All the little people he was and all the memories he created are but whispers in my memory banks now. Me, who almost never cries, can tear up at the collection of pictures in my bedroom (my husband calls it my shrine). All the stories from my son’s growing up years are in those pictures and I treasure each and every one. They are stories that I’ll never get to re-live except through the pictures that re-kindle my memories and warm my heart.
I don’t just take pictures. I tell YOUR story.
That your husband is a firefighter and really has saved lives. That your Dad dedicated his entire career to the armed forces. That you love to travel and you adore your children more than life itself. That your little boy loves baseball and dinosaurs and weapons and his little brother, not necessarily in that order. That your little girl looks just like you, with non-stop curls and an easy smile. That your baby was perfect when he was born and so tiny you could hang your wedding ring on his big toe with room to spare.
What I do is stop time for just a beat…
So you can glance at a treasured photo and let that memory wash over you. I preserve your story in images so perfectly that the memories never die. They become heirlooms and legends and family history and live on in our hearts and for generations.
That is what I do.
And here’s what may be the best part – it’s all done for you. All you have to do is show up.
You may love to photograph but maybe it’s too hard to read the darn camera manual and you can’t get quite the pictures you want. Or you plain don’t have the time to get it done. Or you want to make sure that the special moments and the most important stories look as special as they are so you’ve decided to entrust them in the hands of someone who’s ‘been there, done that’ a thousand times before.
